A Note from Your President

September 2020: The first “N” in Intentional is Never forget your “why”.

Do you remember why you started this sometimes-lonely journey? Do you remember why you do what you do? My guess is that it is not about the money. Maybe it is the passion to change and impact others, to make a difference. Maybe the adrenaline, or the rush of controlling 50-5,000 participants packing the ballroom with all eyes on you. Maybe it is something entirely different.

Maybe, just maybe we have forgotten why we get in the planes, trains, and automobiles. If it is becoming a JOB, then it is time to remind yourself why. When we forget our why we could lose some of the passion and it changes our delivery.

It could be time for a pivot or a subtle change. Think about how many ways there are to deliver your message. We have all seen a big shift to virtual, many of us forced to embrace being in front of the camera and finding ways to interact and engage with our clients.

It could be time to learn more technology. By the time you learn one aspect of technology is has changed and now there is a new way to do the same thing quicker.

Think about what those speakers that knock it out of the park look like as they are delivering their message. They always have a smile, they are filled with joy, emotion and they remember their why. They engage in it every day, in most every conversation. It was on full display last month as the new 2020 CPAE’s were announced during Influence. Congratulations Mary Kelly CSP/CPAE, Ford Saeks CSP/CPAE, Barry Banther CSP/CPAE, Jason Dorsey CSP/CPAE and Sam Richter CSP/CPAE.

This is a reminder to be Intentional, revisit your why. Has it changed?

We hope you have taken advantage of some of the amazing talent on display that included Mark Brown CSP, The Speakers Forum, The Fireside Chat just to scratch the surface.

Continue to watch the events tab on speaker.org for upcoming Special Events, Labs, Hospitality Events, Community Events, Comedy Workshop and more.

We will continue to monitor COVID-19 and the county requirements. When we do meet, we will follow all requirements including masks. The determination of the live versus virtual only will be 14 days prior to each event. Remember it is about your safety. All Monthly Chapter Meetings and Learning Labs will be available virtually through June 2021.

You are all missed!

Now it is time to ask, “how did you intentionally move forward this month”?

Virtual Chapter Meeting with Alan Weiss, PhD, CSP, CPAE
The End of Speaking

The speaking profession has been dying for a long time. The problem being that everyone but speakers seem to realize this. Alan Weiss, PhD, CSP, CPAE is going to share techniques from his global coaching experience that will position you as an expert with varying capabilities to improve the client’s condition.

This is a highly interactive, provocative session. Don’t expect the “sand dollar” story or “how to use technology.”

In loving celebration of our friend, Dawnie Dahir

On August 24, we lost an invaluable member of our NSA North Texas family when Dawnie Dahir made her transition. Dawnie leaves behind an array of friends from her professional speaking endeavors with both NSA and Toastmasters (TM). She shared her generous heart through her service on the leadership teams of the respective groups, and she received the highest TM honor in 2018 — the Distinguished Toastmaster Award.

With her big heart, sense of humor and infectious laugh, Dawnie excelled with people from wide-ranging backgrounds. With the love of her life, Ed, she raised three amazing daughters — first identical twins Kim and Kerri, then Brandy arriving three years later.

Dawnie understood the needs of the child within all of us, but she particularly adored her six grandchildren. In 2016, she wrote a children’s book, “Let Me Give You a Whisper” to encourage and inspire their developing imaginations.

Dawnie’s spirituality and faith played a powerful role in her life. Rev. Melinda Wood Allen, her minister from the Cathedral of Light in Farmers Branch, described her aptly: “Dawnie is an amazing spiritual force, and an important and irreplaceable part of our ministry, as member, supporter, platform volunteer, speaker, teacher, friend, and sister in Spirit for many years.”

Dawnie’s NSA-NT colleagues share the sentiment expressed! She made indelible prints on our hearts. We feel a sense of loss with her passing, and we will never forget the impact she made on our lives!

A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at Rhoton Funeral Home of Carrollton at 1:00pm. Flowers and donations can be sent to 1511 S Interstate 35E, Carrollton, TX 75006.

Positive Posts

Stu Schlackman, CSPEven though live speaking events are “temporarily” on hold, we now have a great opportunity to focus on virtual events that have been growing and now will accelerate even quicker. I believe our business can shift to one of more flexibility and volume. Less travel, more online meeting opportunities. I’m always impressed with the ingenuity of our industry!
