A Note from Your President

What a difference 24 hours can make! You plan for months for the Chapter meetings, and at the last minute, your speaker becomes ill and is in the hospital. W Mitchell could not be with us for our September meeting, and we are wishing him a speedy recovery. As a result, we experienced the old axiom, when one door closes, another opens.

In a heartbeat, several of our highly talented colleagues stepped up to fill the bill: Niki McCuistion moderated a panel discussing “How to recession-proof your business in challenging times”. Panel members included Elizabeth McCormick (our newly minted CSP!), CSPs Stu Schlackman, Linda Swindling, and Jim Pancero CSP, CPAE. The discussion offered a variety of perspectives as to how we speakers can thrive in an economy that may not be very predictable for a while. It also gave our audience members the opportunity to ask plenty of questions and have a highly interactive discussion with the panelists. And that was only the first half of the meeting.

CSP CPAE Christine Cashen both entertained and educated our members and visitors, as only Christine can do! Her presentation: “Seasoned Speaker Spills the Tea”, included sensational speaking shortcuts and secrets along with numerous ideas to easily craft our messages. And of course, she’s hilarious. When I called Christine about speaking to our Chapter with about 24 hours’ notice, she was boarding a plane heading home from an event, and she let me know she had another conference early on Saturday morning. However, she quickly agreed to also be one of our speakers, and that she could arrive at our meeting in time to do the second act for us.

I cannot begin to express the gratitude I have for all who, without hesitation, answered the call on such short notice. It became a real-time learning lab for our audience demonstrating how plans can change on a dime and be highly successful. It was a clear validation of the giving nature of our members and the value these six provided at the meeting.

This Chapter meeting had another interesting twist. The Board discovered that the vote for our current Board of Directors was not properly recorded last June, so we voted again at the September Chapter meeting. I am happy to report that your Board was elected – again!

Vivacious Volunteers Needed!

Volunteers are vital to the existence of our chapter. We would love for you to help our programming department and/or greet people when they arrive at our Saturday meetings. One of our founding members, the late Joe Charbonneau, who our Academy is named after said, “You have to give, give, give, to get, get, get.”  I’ll explain from my own experience the importance of giving as it relates to our chapter at our next meeting. IMPORTANT CHAPTER SURVEY COMING!

In 2014-2015, NSA-NT administered a survey to collect specific data to improve our chapter. We used the data with great success. On October 7th,  all event attendees from the past three years (2016-present) will be sent a new chapter survey via email. Please take the time to complete the survey. It will provide valuable input to help us continue to grow and improve our Chapter offerings and programs.

Your input is crucial in areas such as:

• Member involvement
• Meeting demographics
