A Note from Your President

Track Your Efforts

The 2nd “t” in Intentional is about tracking your efforts.

Happy New Year 2021!

Can you remember another year you were more excited to welcome?

Many of us have seen challenges throughout the past year. We have enjoyed some successes, as well. Do you remember those? After all, they could have been little blips along the way easily overlooked or forgotten.

Keep a notepad by your desk and make notes of your progress throughout the day. Write down your successes, as the failures are lessons well remembered.

Tracking your effort and activity could take on many forms. The concern is not what shape it takes. It is more you have a record of your effort and time.

The desired outcome is a journal containing moments of progress. These include daily, small, seemingly insignificant events, career growth, awards, and special moments in your life. Reflect on them when you ask yourself, What have I been doing with all my time? Where did all my time go?

Undocumented successes are easily forgotten.

Jim Rhon says the most successful people do the little things better than anyone else.

The hope, in the current unprecedented times, is the message this year has been clear. You have taken notes along the way to help you move forward. You have a message to share. You have a book in you. Make sure you have a few notes to refer to later when you are ready to write.

The 2021 NSA NT calendar looks to be as busy as the end of 2020. Refer to the calendar on speaker.org to help you schedule your month. Here are the January dates to note:

VIRTUAL
Chapter Meeting with Lou Heckler, CSP, CPAE

Making Meetings Magic

Register today for your VIRTUAL seat!

What are some of the techniques that top professional speakers use to make their audiences feel like they are part of their presentations? In this session, long-time NSA member Lou Heckler, CSP, CPAE will show us some of the strategies and techniques he has used to sustain his business over the decades…and more importantly, to leave his audiences with real-world solutions to their business problems.

Among the ideas he will share are:

  • How to make your presentation to feel like a dialogue, not a monologue
  • How to create powerful stories that make your points even as they make the audience feel like they are part of the stories as you tell them
  • How movement on the stage (when you have one) or facial and vocal variety (when you don’t) will help you forge a connection to each person

NSA NT Community Outreach

Our efforts will be supporting the NSA Foundation for Jan and Feb. www.NSAFoundation.org

NSA North Texas has made a concerted effort to support the NSA Foundation. Did you know our chapter has had numerous volunteers including performers, committee members, and event volunteers? Count Christine Cashen, Gary Rifkin, Alex Ramsey, and Dianna BOOHER as those who have served. NSA NT members have also served in leadership roles including the past national chair, Randy Pennington, the current chair, Jim Pancero, and current Board of Trustees member, Linda Swindling.

In addition to the emergency funds for health and national disasters, the Foundation also provides community grants and scholarships.

Non-profit organizations that NSA members support like Summer Santa and Metrocrest Services have received grants from the Foundation. NSA NT has had at least four college and/or graduate students related to our chapter receive scholarships.

AND…
A large portion of the money raised in our chapter’s auctions and fundraisers go towards sending our chapter members to NSA Foundation events like dinners and educational seminars. (A win-win-win for your NSA Foundation, our NSA NT Chapter, and our members!)

What is the NSA Foundation?

The NSA Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the National Speakers Association and serves to help those members and families of our NSA Community, as well as those in need in our larger global community. It is devoted to upholding the spirit of serving, sharing, and supporting embodied by our founder Cavett Robert, CSP, CPAE. The Foundation is able to act on behalf of our members to do something that comes naturally in the speaking profession – helping others.

What does it do?

The Foundation serves members and the public through:
• Financial help (PSBF) for NSA members who have suffered either personal health or natural disaster emergencies;
• Scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in public speaking;
• Grants (Art Berg) to help charitable organizations communicate through technology; and
• Grants to support a charity each year in the city of our annual Convention.

Start the year off right!

The Silver Lining

Stu Schlackman, CSP

I believe there is always an opportunity when there is a tremendous shift in the way we conduct our business. Many times the first view of change is that it’s disruptive. And it is! But it can also be the beginning of a new way of meeting the needs of your customers. The reason is that change has been disruptive for them.

Virtual speaking and training were making their way into the market several years ago. Now that it’s accelerating I believe it’s a great opportunity to increase the frequency of your delivering value with this platform. The expenses are minimal with no travel and instead of being limited to two presentations in two different cities in a week, you can deliver 5 or more without leaving your office or studio. Even though our fees will be reduced from in-person, the frequency can help make up part of the difference. I believe new ways of looking at value will be created during this time. It will give more people opportunities to tap their created juices.

More than ever your content is key to your success. People are hungry for learning knowing that picking up new skills and knowledge will help them through the pandemic challenges.

I believe the silver lining will be on the other side when we start to meet in person again. Look at the smartphone and all the app opportunities that came from this new technology years ago. The same can happen with virtual presentations.

Many blessings to all of you for 2021.
