A Note from Your President

Welcome to March! I love talking and finding out more about our fantastic NSA North Texas Members! So many of our members right now are laser focused with increasing their Speaking Momentum… and it’s exciting! Many of us are deep into developing and delivering our keynotes and client programs. We’re persistently responding to the challenges of constant change, complexity and maintaining a fast pace in this inspiring business!

And so is your NSA North Texas Chapter! Last month we set a record in activity! Your Board of Directors spent an entire day evaluating our current NSA NT Chapter’s status and discussing how we can “POWER UP” even better!

As I look at our members formidable activity and the bustle going on… I think about what it takes to succeed both personally and professionally for each of us (and our NSA North Texas Chapter) to reach our goals and achieve success! I come up with 3 words…

GRIT – RESILIENCY – TENACITY

Grit matters more than talent and luck to achieve extraordinary things! It’s a passion and perseverance you display for your long-term goals! Grit is the Momentum that when you’ve got the clarity and determination towards reaching your end goal – you’ll achieve it!

Resiliency – Resilience can be tough. We all experience setbacks. Resilience requires the courage to confront painful realities – have the faith that there will be a solution when one isn’t immediately evident, and strengthen our resolve to carry on!

An example of this is in Leadership. The true grit of a leader is not how they perform during the good times but rather how they display emotional strength, courage and professionalism during the most trying times.

Tenacity – As speakers, we all need a high TQ – Tenacity Quotient! We and our clients are constantly having to embrace change. The world is transforming faster than ever before and we have to be equipped to handle numerous upheavals, changes and challenges. Being able to sustain our commitment during tough times and never quit is what makes the difference between being exceptional or just mediocre in this business!

March is going to be outstanding month in our NSA North Texas Chapter! I can’t wait to explore the possibilities and learn more from each of you!

Get Ready to Use LinkedIn to Make More Money!

Learn the 8 steps you can take to grow your speaking business through LinkedIn

Want more speaking, consulting and product sales? Are you fighting to get your message heard? Do you have what it takes to establish yourself as a market thought leader? I don’t want your friendship on LinkedIn…I want your money. LinkedIn has become a business growth engine, no longer just a platform to make new business friends. Are you actually driving LinkedIn to get new clients and revenues? …or are you just “Riding the LinkedIn Bus” as a passenger (connecting with a few people, posting a few written articles, commenting on other’s posts…and seeing no results). This interactive lab will really be a “LinkedIn Mastermind Group” discussing what is working best among our chapter members doing the most on LinkedIn. We will also be talking about what we can all be doing to help and support each other’s LinkedIn efforts.

Warning! This is an advanced seminar (But all NSA-NT members are welcome!) This is not an introductory class to learn the operational basics of LinkedIn but instead will be a tactical marketing discussion giving you specific steps to increase your LinkedIn visibility and prospect connectivity. My goal is to offer you a day of advanced discussions with fellow active LinkedIn Geeks who are already using this tool to grow their business and are working to get better results. You will be welcomed no matter what your LinkedIn skills or how small your LinkedIn following! Just be prepared for us not to spend much time answering the most basic LinkedIn questions.

This interactive program will be led by fellow NSA-NT members and LinkedIn Ninjas Jim Pancero, CSP, CPAE and Stu Schlackman, CSP, CPAE. They will also be inviting chapter members already generating business from LinkedIn to contribute to the day and to offer their processes as case studies.

You will learn the 8 steps to mastering LinkedIn:

Step 1 – Get ready, research the landscape, follow the rules!

Step 2 – Identify market/industry targets and start connecting Step 3 – Become sticky touching everyone by automating and replicating Step 4 – Start screaming Step 5 – Integrate LinkedIn (and your #Hashtags) into your other selling efforts Step 6 – Initiate targeted outreach using your LinkedIn posting results Step 7 – Feed your tribe other people’s stuff to become a thought-leader Step 8 – Support your friends

you, the speaker: Pick Your Passion Project

by Dave Lieber, CSP, Dallas Morning News columnist

I apologize to all y’all. For the first time in my 14 years as a chapter member, I haven’t been around much. Missed meetings. Turned down opportunities to participate in our podcast project. Even missed the deadline for last month’s newsletter. (That’s not like me.)

No, I’m not sick. Not lazy.

Just working under the tightest of deadlines.

In addition to my twice-a-week Watchdog column in The Morning News and a bit of speaking, I’ve written a play – my first — that will debut in May. And I wrote a book – my eighth – to go with the play. It all happened at once.

How does this matter to you?

Well, so much of this project utilized skills I learned as a two-time Charbonneau Academy graduate, class of 2006 and 2007, and then afterward as I continued learning through our association.

As speakers, each of us has a dream project we’ve been longing to do. Finding the time and the perfect amount of inspiration are obstacles.

How do you ‘git er done?’ Tips to succeed (although I won’t know until Opening Night if I did.)

  1. A Passion Project: Let’s all agree there’s no time left in your life to build that passion project of your dreams. So what? You gotta do it anyway. There’s a reason we call these “passion projects.” How do you pull it off? Drive, discipline and focus.
  2. Study Up: I never wrote a play. I had to learn. I bought books on playwriting and studied plays. I joined the Dramatists Guild of America, where I worked my way up from associate member to full member. Sound familiar?
  3. Files, Files and More Files: Perhaps you saw my story https://www.dallasnews.com/news/watchdog/2018/11/15/dallas-man-showed-fight-new-city-park-will-never-get-see on President Betti Coffey’s late husband Bruce and his quest to build a Dallas city park. Bruce’s secret was his maintenance of hundreds of paper files that told the story of his efforts. His files made him feel organized and on top of things. I borrowed Bruce’s methods in recent weeks and used files to organize a massive project – a play and a companion book with 100 historic photographs. I was swimming in it. Bruce’s final lesson: organization is key.
  4. Perseverance: I wish I could show you a stack of rejection letters from the many theater companies to whom I sent my play script. Only I don’t have a single rejection letter. It’s not what you think. No one bothered to write back and reject me. Crickets.

Every theater ignored me. Even the one that ultimately accepted the play didn’t open the envelope for four months – and only after I asked about it.

Final note: If you’re wondering, the play – AMON! The Ultimate Texan – is about Amon G. Carter Sr., one of the most consequential figures in Texas during the first half of the 20th century. He owned the largest paper in the state, the Star-Telegram, and also created the first radio station (WBAP) and first TV station (Channel 5). He was also a bit nuts, but a marketer that would make you proud. This novice playwright had plenty of good storytelling to work with.

AMON! The Ultimate Texan opens in Hurst on May 9-25 at Artisan Center Theater, the largest community theater in North Texas. (With real actors, not me.) Tickets on sale here. http://www.artisanct.com/event/37177a2cea80fc0e48df8d80bf65308a

Now that it’s mostly out of my hands and into the theater’s, we can catch up. I’ll see you at the next meeting. And maybe even at the theater.

Read Dave’s latest columns every Friday and Sunday in The Morning News and at DallasNews.com/watchdog
