Here is your opportunity to recognize our hardworking members who help “Power Up” NSA NT and keep it strong and vibrant!

Each year, the North Texas Chapter of the National Speakers Association (NSA NT) awards the Zig Ziglar Member of the Year to a Professional Member who has gone “beyond the call of duty to aid and promote the Chapter”. Nominations open this month and the top nominees will be voted on by eligible Chapter members. You can nominate electronically or at our April Chapter meeting. A follow up email will include instructions.

Anyone (Professional and Candidate Members) can nominate a Professional Member for the Zig Ziglar Member of the Year Award so please take a moment to ensure that the worthy members in the Chapter are considered for this honor.

Please note that the Chapter President, Betti Coffey, and last five winners: Tim Marvel, Sandi Leyva, Victoria Williams, Andrew Szabo and Chris Price are ineligible for this year’s award.

We will vote on nominees at our May Chapter meeting and the winner will be announced at our June Chapter meeting. We will also allow voting electronically.

you, the speaker: Don’t throw stuff at your audience

by Dave Lieber, CSP, Dallas Morning News columnist

“Don’t throw anything at them!” my wife warned as I left for my speech the other day.

That’s not the usual advice, but this isn’t the usual audience.

The Oak Cliff Lions Club, one of the biggest Lions clubs in the region, has a few unusual traditions.

I was last a luncheon speaker at this club 10 years ago. I never forgot them.

During that talk, they threw a dozen dinner rolls at me. They said it was a club tradition. I remember throwing a few back. But I was under such a barrage that I couldn’t win.

So, 10 years pass, and when the leader of the Oak Cliff Lions Club called last month and asked if I’d like to come back for another once-every-decade appearance, I asked if they still threw rolls.

“We don’t do that anymore,” she said.

So I give my speech. And for good measure, I had tucked a dinner roll in my front pants pocket.

You know where this is going, right?

At the end of my 20-minute talk, a man at a front table – I think he’s the former mayor of a neighboring city – picked up a dinner roll and threw it. It hit me in the chest.

Without a moment of thought, I grabbed the roll out of my pocket and heaved it back at him.

What happened next, happened in ultra-slow motion.

My roll flew through the air and landed on the table in front of him. But the darn roll didn’t die. It bounced up. Bounced up so hard that it flew on to the table behind his.

If that glass of iced tea on the second table was a golf hole, and that roll was a golf ball, I would have had a hole in one.

PLUNK!!

The roll hit an innocent woman’s glass and spilled iced tea on the table. A bit of it – and this bothers me – flowed into her purse!

I immediately ran over and apologized. She acted like she was fine. Lions Club shenanigans. No big deal.

I gave her a free book and apologized again.

Later, my wife asked, “How’d it go?”

When I told her the story, she let out a sigh. All the work she’s done to make me a more mature Dave, well, it shows her task is incomplete.

Here, before you now, I raise my right hand and swear to all my speaker pals that I will never throw a dinner roll at an audience member again.

Note: Dave writes the twice-a-week Watchdog column in The Dallas Morning News, a heavy-hitting column where he throws more than rolls at his subject matter.

Read Dave’s latest columns every Friday and Sunday in The Morning News and at DallasNews.com/watchdog
