You, the Speaker

Dave’s 10 simple speaker rules for 2019

You don’t have to follow these 10 simple speaker rules, but I try to.

  1. 1. Don’t list the word “Speaker” as your first job title on your business card. So many other words to choose from: Author. Expert. Trainer. Coach. Strategist. Turn-Around Artist. Think I’m kidding? Google search the word “speaker.” Humans do not come up.
  2. If you’ve been out of the corporate world for many years and work as a solo practitioner, how do you know the feel of the corporate world today? Never underestimate how much your absence weakens you, but also note that you may see things with fresh eyes.
  3. 70 characters. What does that mean to you? You should know it’s the number of characters in a headline, generally, before Google starts cutting off words. Can you write a great title or headline in 70 characters or less? Always? And that includes spaces!
  4. Are you jealous of a speaker in your genre who has a much bigger career than you? (Who isn’t?) Replace the word jealous with “admiring” or “respectful.” No need for negative energy.
  5. Aim for your Certified Speaking Professional designation. If you’re a newby, set up your spread sheet to capture all the relevant information from Day One so a few years from now, it’s almost done. If you’re close to getting it, take the giant step. It’s worth it.
  6.  You can’t make it in this business without speaker buddies. I’m not talking about a mastermind group. I’m talking about someone whom you can call at midnight — and cry.
  7. Every so often, try this. Open a private browser on your computer or phone so Google doesn’t recognize you as being signed in. Go to the Google search box and type in your name and then leave a space after the last letter. See what auto-populates. Those are the words people are associating with your name when they search for you. Do this in different parts of the nation when you travel because results may differ. If nothing comes up, it means you’re not on the radar yet – and you have more work to do.
  8. Brag about yourself. There’s no such thing as “shameless self-promotion.” Not if you want to eat.
  9. Whenever possible replace “I” with “you.”
  10. Remember that Control-Z is your best friend at the keyboard. Life is great when you get a do-over.
