Calvin Dorsey

About Calvin Dorsey:

Calvin has been a member of NSA since 1992 and his decision to join this great organization is one of the best decisions he has ever made because of the relationships, resources, and professional opportunities designed for lifelong learning. That’s NSA!

As a management consultant, Calvin focuses on organizational development by providing tailored training in a workshop environment onsite and virtually. Frequently requested topics include skills for high performance teamwork, bootcamps for managers and supervisors, conflict resolution strategies, customer service excellence, effective communication skills, emotional intelligence, and improving managerial effectiveness with SOCIAL STYLE.

Calvin has a unique ability to connect with an audience, activate their interest in learning, and to help them develop a roadmap for effectively applying the concepts to achieve the best results.

What sets him apart? His unique experiences in advertising sales and management, consulting, training, insurance, teaching, community service and in creating, producing, and hosting an award-winning television show help him engage audiences with passion and insight.

His courses are certified by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) and the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSBPA) which means that attendees in his sessions can earn Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits.

What audiences you speak for?

All audiences including the private and public sectors can benefit from the training programs. Fortune 100 companies, small businesses, and non-profits have endorsed their effectiveness for achieving results.

What led you to this career?

It was a progressive evolution that has been a natural fit for my skillset.

What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?

I am continually working on the effective use of the appropriate technology to enhance my user experience.

What’s your go-to productivity trick?

Personally, I just stick to the basics and look at my work through the eyes of the audience and ask myself three questions:

  1. Why are you doing this?
  2. Why is the audience here?
  3. How can you help the audience get what it wants?

ZIG ZIGLER QUOTE: You can get what you want by helping others get what they want. After answering the questions, I go to work.

Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?

Early in my speaking career, my NSA-NT mentor was Joe Charbonneau. His influence along with others like Anne Sadovsky, Valerie Sokolosky, and Nikki McCuistion helped to steer me in the right direction.

What’s a mistake you made early on in your career, and what did you learn from it?

While I would not necessarily call it a mistake, early in my career my focus was too broad in terms of client acquisition. What has worked much more effectively is providing more services vertically to fewer clients.

What’s a work-related accomplishment that you’re really proud of?

There have been several:

  1. Securing a six-figure annual contract
  2. Getting referrals from existing customers which have blossomed over the years.
  3. Re-inventing myself to stay relevant

What being a member of NSA-NT means to you (testimonial)

Early in my career I noticed that the members of NSA-NT were as good as gold …possibly better because I had never been a part of an organization where members taught other members how to compete with them… to become the best. A rising tide surely lifts all boats.

Something personal you want us to know- can be about family, a vacation, a favorite food- anything you care to share.

My family and I love the Caribbean.
