A Note from Your President

In the last two weeks I’ve been asked who the advocates are in my life. So maybe it’s the universe nudging me to write more about having fans.

Last month I talked about the fact that we all need a cheering section. Fans are so important. Not the fake ones who are along for the wins but bail when you hit some tough times.

In a rut, can’t get booked, stuck with a so-so keynote and can’t seem to find the right words? Struggling with some sort of baggage you haven’t unloaded? This is when you really need your fans.

So how do you spot fans? It’s almost organic. Maybe they appeared years before but suddenly you’ve grown close. The trust is there and this won’t be for a season. This is my favorite kind of fan because the friendship took time to develop and the trust followed. Lifers no matter when they appear in your life don’t bail. They can’t because the bond is too strong.

My next favorite fans are the collective. On the air at NBC I call these fans face painters. Some attributes include: loyalty, excessive cheering and massive interest. They are part of your group. No way will they not lift you up. I hope when you come to NSA North Texas meetings this is how you feel. When you drive away you are pumped and ready to roll feeling inspired. #mostbookedNSAchapter

you, the speaker: A thank you like no other – “In our chapter, we’re Mentorville, USA”

by Dave Lieber, CSP
Dallas Morning News columnist

If you’re reading this, you, the speaker, believe you’re successful, for sure.

Nobody who lacked a strong record of success and a desire to share would ever dream of becoming a professional speaker.

If you’re reading this, as I say, you’ve got it.

But how did you get here? Chances are you were helped by a teacher, an editor, a very close friend. You didn’t do it on your own.

I’m writing to ask you, the speaker, to consider doing what I sometimes do.

Write a letter of gratitude to that special person who helped you get on the right road.

I first did this with my high school journalism teacher, James Fischer-Northrup. He had an amazing waxed mustache and taught the five W’s. When I got a job on a newspaper, I wrote him on the official stationery to thank him.

When I left that little paper, years later, I wrote the editor, Don Marsh, to thank him for giving me that opportunity.

It got to be a habit.

At first, I thought it would make them feel good. Now I realize it makes me feel good. To use an expression I detest – it’s a win/win.

If you’re reading this, you already know that of all the jobs you’ll have, you’ll never have as many mentors as you will in NSA/North Texas. We’re Mentorville, USA.

We don’t have to write thank you notes to each other because we see one another on the second Saturday of the month.

I didn’t have that luxury with my most recent thank you letter. I wrote to Tony Lyle, who 39 years ago hired me to be the student columnist on my college alumni magazine.

The Pennsylvania Gazette was a classy magazine, New Yorkerish with high literary standards. I was a street kid learning how to write.

Four decades later, I wrote him in Philadelphia to thank him for helping me achieve my writer’s dream, holding me to high standards, being patient, even when he chewed me out. (There was this one time…)

He wrote me back. Now 79, he called my note to him “kind and thoughtful.”

He wrote that he was “privileged to have been able to observe and support your talent for writing and your acute sense of fairness. Keep up the magnificent work.”

He recommended I read a certain article in that week’s New Yorker mag, and added, “It’s nice to be remembered.”

He died 43 days later.

In this business, we are taught to always look ahead.

Looking back, like this, is good, too.

Thank you are the two best words.

October 2017 – Too many Irons in the Fire?

by Sherrie Wilson

Do you feel like you have multiple opportunities? Simultaneous opportunities? Working a regular job, writing a book, attending a meeting, working on your speech, giving a speech and raising a family? Blacksmiths traditionally work iron by heating it red-hot and hammering with repeated blows. Once the iron is cool, it becomes brittle and cannot be hammered. Multiple irons in the fire actually allows the blacksmith to work more efficiently by having multiple pieces of iron heating simultaneously. This way when one is red-hot and ready it can be hammered into proper focus.

“What matters most is how well you walk through the fire.” – Charles Bukowski

Consider that a speaking career is something of a blacksmithing job. Yes, we have a lot of irons in the fire, but that’s sets us apart from the rest of the crowd. Contemplate on this “The more you do, the more you can do!”

Pay attention to the internal conversations you have with yourself about how much there is to do. Instead tell yourself you are a Get-R-Done person! It is amazing how controlling the internal chatter can help your own efficiency and get yourself booked. Your current NSANT board is all about you getting booked. Challenge those negative conversations about too many irons in the fire and become a speaker, author blacksmith.
